The care you provide to your surgical wound after leaving the operating room plays a critical role in how well and how quickly you heal. Proper wound care reduces infection risk, minimizes scarring, and can prevent complications that might require additional treatment. At Surgery Dubai, we provide every surgical patient with detailed, procedure-specific wound care instructions and ongoing support throughout the healing process.
Wound healing occurs in three overlapping phases. The inflammatory phase (days 1-5) involves blood clotting, swelling, and white blood cell activity to clear debris and bacteria. The proliferative phase (days 5-21) sees new blood vessel formation, collagen deposition, and wound edge contraction. The maturation phase (weeks to months) involves collagen remodeling and scar strengthening—the scar eventually reaches approximately 80% of the original tissue’s strength.
Your surgical dressing should remain in place for the time specified by your surgeon—typically 24-48 hours for clean wounds. Do not remove the dressing early to “check” the wound, and keep it completely dry during this period. If the dressing becomes wet from showering or perspiration, contact our clinic for advice on replacement.
Most patients can shower 48 hours after surgery, once the initial dressing has been removed and the wound is covered with a waterproof dressing. Do not submerge the wound in a bath, pool, or sea water until your surgeon confirms the wound has fully closed—typically 2-3 weeks for most incisions.
Once the initial dressing is removed, gently clean the wound area with mild soap and water during your shower. Pat dry with a clean towel—do not rub. Avoid applying antiseptic solutions, hydrogen peroxide, or antibiotic ointments unless specifically instructed by your surgeon, as these can actually delay healing.
Contact Surgery Dubai immediately if you notice any of the following:
Uncontrolled blood sugar impairs white blood cell function, reduces collagen production, and damages small blood vessels—all of which slow wound healing. Diabetic patients must maintain tight glucose control before and after surgery.
Nicotine constricts blood vessels, reducing oxygen delivery to the wound. Smokers have a 2-4 times higher risk of wound healing complications. Ideally, stop smoking at least 4-6 weeks before surgery.
Adequate protein intake (1.2-1.5 g/kg/day) is essential for collagen synthesis. Vitamins A, C, and zinc play important roles in wound healing. Our team may recommend specific supplements during your recovery period.
Excess adipose tissue has poor blood supply and is prone to fluid collection and wound separation, making wound care particularly important for overweight patients.
Once the wound has closed and any sutures have been removed, you can begin scar management:
At Surgery Dubai, we schedule follow-up visits to monitor your wound healing progress. The first visit is typically 5-7 days after surgery for wound inspection, with a second visit at 10-14 days for suture removal (if non-dissolvable sutures were used). Additional visits may be scheduled based on your individual healing trajectory.
If you have recently had surgery—whether at our facility or elsewhere—and are concerned about your wound healing, contact Surgery Dubai. Our experienced surgical team can assess your wound, address any concerns, and provide guidance to optimize your recovery.
