Vasectomy: A Straightforward Procedure for Permanent Contraception
A vasectomy is one of the most effective and reliable forms of permanent contraception available. With a failure rate of less than 1 in 2,000 after confirmation of sterility, it is more effective than female sterilization and far less invasive. Despite this, vasectomy rates in the UAE remain lower than global averages, partly due to misconceptions about the procedure. At Surgery Dubai, our urologists perform vasectomies regularly using minimally invasive techniques, and we ensure every patient fully understands the procedure, recovery, and implications before proceeding.
How a Vasectomy Works
The vas deferens are the two thin tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra. A vasectomy cuts and seals these tubes, preventing sperm from mixing with semen. The procedure does not affect testosterone production, sex drive, or the ability to have erections and orgasms. Seminal fluid (the liquid component of ejaculate) continues to be produced normally—only the sperm are absent, making up just 2-5% of total ejaculate volume.
The No-Scalpel Vasectomy Technique
At Surgery Dubai, we perform the no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) technique, which is associated with less pain, fewer complications, and faster recovery than the traditional method. Instead of making incisions with a scalpel, the surgeon uses a sharp pointed instrument to make tiny punctures in the scrotal skin. The vas deferens are brought to the surface through these punctures, a small segment is removed, and the ends are sealed using cautery or sutures. The punctures are so small that no stitches are needed—they close on their own.
The entire procedure takes 15-30 minutes under local anesthesia. You remain awake and can go home within 30 minutes of completion.
Preparing for Your Vasectomy
- Schedule the procedure for a day when you can rest afterward—ideally a Thursday for weekend recovery in Dubai
- Shave the front of the scrotum the evening before (or we can do this in the clinic)
- Wear snug-fitting underwear or a jockstrap to the appointment for post-procedure support
- Eat a normal meal before the procedure—fasting is not required
- Arrange for someone to drive you home (optional but recommended)
- Do not take aspirin or blood thinners for 7 days before the procedure
Recovery Timeline
Days 1-2
Rest at home with your scrotum elevated on a folded towel. Apply ice packs for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. Wear supportive underwear day and night. Mild discomfort and bruising are normal—manage with acetaminophen. Avoid standing or walking for prolonged periods.
Days 3-5
Gradually increase activity. Most men return to desk work by day 3. Continue wearing supportive underwear. Mild swelling and discoloration may persist but should gradually improve.
Week 2
Most normal activities can resume, including light exercise. Sexual activity can typically be resumed after 7 days, but remember—you are not yet sterile.
Week 3 and Beyond
Full physical activity including heavy lifting and vigorous exercise can resume. The small puncture sites should be fully healed and barely visible.
The Critical Step: Post-Vasectomy Semen Analysis
You are NOT sterile immediately after a vasectomy. Sperm remain in the vas deferens beyond the cut point, and it takes approximately 20-30 ejaculations to clear them. At Surgery Dubai, we schedule semen analysis at 8 weeks and again at 12 weeks post-procedure. You must use alternative contraception until you receive confirmation of azoospermia (zero sperm) on two consecutive semen samples. Approximately 80-90% of men are confirmed sterile by 12 weeks; the remainder may need additional testing at 16-20 weeks.
Common Concerns Addressed
Will It Affect My Sex Drive or Performance
No. Vasectomy has no effect on testosterone levels, libido, erectile function, or ejaculation. The only change is the absence of sperm in the ejaculate—which is not visually or physically noticeable.
Is It Reversible
Vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) is possible but should not be counted on. Success rates decline over time: approximately 90% patency at 3 years, dropping to 40-50% at 15 years. Reversal is also significantly more expensive (AED 30,000-60,000) and not covered by insurance. Consider vasectomy permanent.
Does It Increase Cancer Risk
Large-scale studies have found no causal link between vasectomy and prostate cancer or testicular cancer.
Cost of Vasectomy in Dubai
- No-scalpel vasectomy: AED 3,000 – AED 6,000 (includes procedure and follow-up semen analyses)
- Traditional vasectomy: AED 2,500 – AED 5,000
Insurance coverage varies in the UAE—some plans cover vasectomy as family planning, while others exclude elective sterilization. Our insurance team can verify your coverage before the procedure.
Is Vasectomy Right for You
Vasectomy is ideal for men who are certain they do not want more children, have completed their family, or have a medical reason to avoid pregnancy. Contact Surgery Dubai for a confidential consultation with our urology team to discuss whether vasectomy is the right choice for your situation.
