Choosing Your Surgeon: Why Training and Experience Matter
When you need surgery, choosing the right surgeon is one of the most important decisions you will make. In Dubai’s healthcare system, patients have access to both general surgeons and subspecialists—and understanding the difference helps you make an informed choice. At Surgery Dubai, our team includes both highly experienced general surgeons and fellowship-trained specialists, ensuring you receive care from the most appropriate practitioner for your condition.
What Is a General Surgeon
A general surgeon completes 5-6 years of surgical residency after medical school, training in a broad range of surgical procedures across multiple body systems. General surgeons are qualified to perform abdominal surgery (hernias, gallbladder, appendix, bowel), breast surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, skin and soft tissue surgery, trauma surgery, and endoscopic procedures. The term “general” refers to the breadth of their training, not a lower level of expertise—they are highly skilled surgeons capable of managing complex cases across their scope of practice.
What Is a Surgical Specialist
A specialist (or subspecialist) completes the same general surgery residency and then undertakes additional fellowship training—typically 1-3 years—focused on a specific area. Common surgical subspecialties include:
- Colorectal surgery — diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus
- Surgical oncology — cancer surgery
- Vascular surgery — arteries and veins (excluding the heart and brain)
- Pediatric surgery — surgical conditions in children
- Bariatric surgery — weight loss surgery
- Hepatobiliary surgery — liver, bile ducts, and pancreas
- Plastic and reconstructive surgery — cosmetic and reconstructive procedures
- Cardiothoracic surgery — heart and lungs
- Neurosurgery — brain and spinal cord
- Urology — kidneys, bladder, prostate, and male reproductive system
When a General Surgeon Is the Right Choice
For many common surgical conditions, a general surgeon is the most appropriate—and often the best—choice:
- Hernia repair — general surgeons perform thousands of hernia repairs and achieve excellent outcomes
- Gallbladder removal — one of the most common operations performed by general surgeons
- Appendectomy — routine emergency and elective appendectomy
- Simple thyroid surgery — general surgeons with thyroid experience perform these routinely
- Benign breast surgery — lumpectomy, biopsy, and benign breast conditions
- Skin lesion removal — lipomas, cysts, and suspicious moles
- Emergency abdominal surgery — bowel obstruction, perforated ulcer, acute appendicitis
When You Should See a Specialist
Certain conditions benefit from or require subspecialist expertise:
- Colorectal cancer — a colorectal surgeon manages the specific techniques (TME, sphincter preservation) that affect cancer outcomes
- Complex or recurrent hernias — while general surgeons handle most hernias, complex abdominal wall reconstructions may benefit from a specialist
- Aortic aneurysm or peripheral vascular disease — vascular surgeons manage these exclusively
- Brain or spinal tumors — neurosurgeons only
- Heart surgery — cardiothoracic surgeons only
- Advanced pancreatic or liver surgery — hepatobiliary specialists achieve better outcomes for complex liver and pancreatic resections
- Bariatric surgery — while some general surgeons perform bariatric procedures, fellowship-trained bariatric surgeons have dedicated expertise
Dubai’s Credentialing System
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) maintains a rigorous credentialing process. All practicing surgeons must hold a valid DHA license, which requires verification of medical qualifications, completion of recognized training programs, and evidence of ongoing professional development. Additionally, DHA classifies practitioners by scope of practice—general surgeons are licensed to perform procedures within their training scope, and specialists are credentialed for their subspecialty procedures. Hospitals perform their own privileging process, granting each surgeon specific procedural privileges based on their training and demonstrated competence.
Questions to Ask When Choosing a Surgeon
- How many of these specific procedures have you performed?
- What is your complication rate for this procedure?
- Are you fellowship-trained in this area?
- What approach do you recommend (open vs minimally invasive) and why?
- What are the alternatives to surgery?
- Will you be performing the entire procedure yourself?
- Who will manage my post-operative care?
